Ysgol Rhiwabon, Wrexham

The annual Ysgol Rhiwabon carol concert in St Mary's Church, Ruabon, was again held this year but slightly differently.

This year the school made a 'Virtual Carol Concert' for the whole community to view to brighten these uncertain times.

Headteacher, Melanie Ferron-Evans, said: ''We are very proud of our pupils' talents and are delighted that we have been able to showcase them from St Mary's Church using our YouTube TV channel.

"I hope you enjoy the concert and I wish everyone a Merry Christmas."

The spirit of the season continued at the school, with Year 9 pupils raising money for Alder Hey Children's Hospital, with a Christmas theme throughout December.

Pupils made paper wreaths made from magazines and old celebration tubs. They had also been making mini Christmas trees out of branches.

These items have been sold to staff and pupils and more than £30 has been raised for Alder Hey.

For the third year running, the pupils have also been donating to the reverse advent, which involved pupils bringing in items of food every day for the food bank.

The school thanked all pupils who brought in food and for the hard work making the different items.

Staff and pupils at the specialist school are celebrating after receiving an Investors in Families Lockdown Award.

The award is issued to settings that show they have provided high quality experiences and support for pupils and families throughout the pandemic.

Amongst other things, the school provided learning opportunities through class DoJo, school comms, social media, phonecalls and face-to-face visits when required.

Garden visits highlighted their ability to adapt to maintain crucial home school links.

Lynsey Woodhouse, director of Investor in Families, said: "We were able to recognise the support you have given your school community and the understanding you demonstrated to ensure everyone is cared for.

"Your online learning platforms provided engaging and varied curriculum, which included weekly check-ins via Teams, live lessons, sensory stories and catch up phone calls.

"Further evidence highlights your dedication to making a difference by offering and delivering iPads and laptops, organising FSM money and packed lunch scheme. You have gone above and beyond."

They were also praised for their Christmas donation initiative and staff training in the Helping Children With Loss Programme and 1-1 grief and loss sessions for families.

Juniors at the school have been studying the topic of 'Survivors' during the autumn term.

As part of this, they learned about a special group of survivors, the homeless.

The school was visited by the Whitechapel Centre in Liverpool.

A woman came to talk to the children about how the centre supports the homeless throughout the year.

She also raised awareness of the seriousness of homelessness in the region.

Pupils also talked with a man who annually sleeps on the streets of Liverpool to raise awareness and raises money to support charity.

The children wanted to support a local cause, and chose Wrexham homeless.

It was suggested they prepare gift bags, asking for donations from parents and the local community.

The school set up drop-off points, and donations started to flood in.

The children worked together to pack the bags, in preparation of dropping them off to be distributed to the homeless.
