A former photographer based in Wrexham recalls memories of the legend that was Les Evans.

John Burns, 69 from Liverpool, spent five years following Wrexham AFC as part of a work assignment and reminisced about his memories of Les.

Leader photographer Les was a well loved character amongst Wrexham, who followed his club up and down the country week in, week out.

Mr Burns, recalled his time spent with Wrexham and Les.

"I was doing an assignment as part of a HNC photography course. As Wrexham had just gone down from the football league I thought it would be a nice story to follow," he said.

"I thought Wrexham would bounce straight back up into the football league structure, but after five years I was still there taking pictures.

"I spoke to Les now and again, funnily enough, once you got into the ground he was always really busy with matchday stuff, with mascots and the players and all the rest."

John added: "I got to know him and we discussed a number of things, as everyone knows, he was a character wasn't he. He seemed to know everyone that came into the club and knew stuff about them. You'd sit and have a cup of tea in the corridor and he knew absolutely everyone.

"One of the pictures I sent was of him fixing the corner flag, that was away at Hayes and Yeading, that sums up how observant Les was, the flag came off and he was the one who sorted it out. He was a good source of information because he was always willing to help.

"Les was the embodiment of what Wrexham was about, he wasn't just taking photographs, he was engaging with everyone and all the fans and as for his photography, it was just brilliant.

"Wrexham had a great community spirit, they had a hardcore set of about 2,000 fans. They could've gone to watch United, Liverpool but no they were watching Wrexham. There was a great community spirit in the club.

"The ground is unbelievable and how they can't get out of that league is beyond me."

After the events of the past year, lets hope that the Reds can finally get back to the football league.
