POLICE have seized thousands of pounds worth of counterfeit tobacco and cigarettes in Wrexham.

Images posted on social media this evening, Thursday, shows the large scale find that was uncovered by Wrexham police officers.

On their Twitter page, a spokesman for the Wrexham Town Policing Team said: “Officers from our NPT have joined Wrexham Trading Standards in a joint operation on storage yards and illicit tobacco sales.

“Counterfeit tobacco and cigarettes with a value of over £50,000 have been seized and enquiries are ongoing.”

According to Wrexham Council’s Trading Standards web page, illegal tobacco means cigarettes and rolling tobacco that is available to purchase at about half the normal cost of tobacco.

It is typically sold online and through social media, from private houses in the community as well as under the counter at some convenience stores and in the workplace.

The low price and easy availability of illegal tobacco makes it much easier for children to get cigarettes and begin a lifelong addiction.

If you know about illegal tobacco for sale in Wrexham you can report it to Trading Standards by emailing tradstand@wrexham.gov.uk or by calling the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 0808 223 1133.
