A COMMUNITY group supporting those who have been given devastating health diagnosis and their families has been shortlisted in the Airbus Community Awards 2021.

Making the top 10 list means the Wrexham Prostate Cancer Support Group is guaranteed to win at least £1,000 towards its fundraising mission

But the organisation could still benefit from up to a whopping £7,000 if it secures enough votes in the grand public vote.

After learning of the good news from the Leader, group chairman Mal Williams said: “We’re thrilled to have been picked to go forward in the awards, the money will make such a difference for our cause.”

The group aims to raise awareness and provide education for men locally given the devastating diagnosis of prostate cancer.

According to the NHS website, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK. It usually develops slowly, so there may be no signs for many years.

The group meets monthly with local men – with partners and family members also welcome.

Mal added: “Men can be notoriously cagey about health issues but knowing the facts is important. Everyone is encouraged to attend the talks, whatever age, men and women.

“Men learn about the risks and what action to take if they are worried about the prostate problem while other attendees benefit from learning about the vital information to pass on to family and friends.”

The community group also shared their ambitious plans for raising money to obtain a cryotherapy machine – thought to be very helpful for prostate cancer patients.

Funds would also be available to help support members of the group with costs associated with treatment that can’t be covered like travel.

Mal continued: “Currently, we reach out to 50 members and attract about three new patients each time we meet. We have plans to establish an improved professional relationship with the Urology Department at Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

“We’re greatly supported by Professor Iqbal Shergill, who is one of Wales top urology specialists, maintaining strong links with us and is helpful in providing guest speakers.”
