This week marks the 60th birthday of Flintshire's only Welsh-medium comprehensive school.

Ysgol Maes Garmon, in Mold, opened on September 6, 1961. The original school was located at the old Glanrafon school building and had 109 pupils aged between 11-14-years-old (Years 7-9).

The school's headteacher was Elwyn Evans, who led a team of six staff members. In 1963, the school relocated to its present site in Conway Street, Mold, and has flourished in numbers, with the school this year welcoming 116 pupils to Year 7.

As Covid restrictions continue to affect the possibility of large gatherings indoors, the school has sought 60 alternative ways of celebrating the momentous anniversary.

The birthday celebrations began on Monday with the sharing through social media of 60 birthday greetings filmed by various celebrities and collected by Year 10 students Nia Jones, Mabli Hampson and Mari Williams.

Birthday wishes came from a whole host of people from stage, screen, radio, sport and music, including presenter Jason Mohammad, former Wales footballer Owain Tudur Jones and Welsh language advocate Ameer Davies-Rana.

Other activities will include a concert celebrating the songs of former teachers Rhys Jones and Aled Lloyd-Davies, a charity golf event and the creation of a time capsule to name but a few.

The school will also be using the occasion to relaunch its website, and is asking former pupils to contact the school so as to collate an interactive map of where in the world they live and work.

Headteacher Bronwen Hughes said: "We are delighted to be welcoming our pupils back to school on the occasion of our 60th birthday following such a challenging period in its history.

"Although some Covid regulations remain in place, we are looking forward to the numerous celebrations planned for the year, and we hope to be able to welcome pupils, staff, friends and former pupils to the school for a formal celebration later in the academic year when it is deemed safe to do so.

"I am so proud of Ysgol Maes Garmon and the role it has played in the wider community over the decades, and I look forward to the new challenges that our school will embrace in the future."
