As the region's pubs and bars return to a version of normality - the Leader is again shining a light on the industry with our Pub of the Week feature.

This is an opportunity for landlords and landladies from across Wrexham and Flintshire to have the chance to showcase their establishment.

Now more than ever, it's vital to support our local businesses.

If you want your pub to be featured, simply fill in our online Q&A or if you would like to nominate a pub, email claire.pierce@newsquest.co.uk.

Step inside this week's pub...

Nestled in the Flintshire countryside is the picture perfect village of Ysceifiog, and at the heart of it is a traditional country pub full of charm, The Fox Inn.

For more than a decade, husband and wife duo Chris and Alwena Swallow have welcomed locals, walkers and cyclists to their classic-looking pub.

Chris said: "We do feel lucky to live in such a lovely village in an area of outstanding beauty and being part of the local community."

And it was the support of that community that helped the couple through the pandemic's lockdowns, with many enjoying the food and cask ale – sourced during lockdown from Cwrw Llŷn, a brewery in Nefyn - on offer for take away, as the pub adapted to a new way of doing things.

They also installed a marquee outside to meet various Covid restrictions and help visitors to the pub feel comfortable and safe.

The marquee is still proving a hit, long after it was regulation-essential, and is popular with those stopping with dogs.

The pub prides itself on supporting other local business too, and specialise in locally sourced meat and produce for their popular menu.

Outings to butchers and breweries during lockdown suddenly became all the more poignant.

Speaking just after the Bank Holiday weekend, I ask how have things been since most restrictions were lifted?

Chris, who has been in the pub trade for many years, including a time as landlord of the Blue Anchor in Buckley, said: "We've probably just had our best August Bank Holiday for a few years.

"The dining room was fully booked, and we were busier than usual."

And they must definitely be doing something right in the kitchen, as they have already had plenty of enquiries about their Christmas Day lunch.

But it's not just the food that sees people returning, as the pub has a choice of well kept cask ales and lagers from local and national breweries too.

Like all good pubs, The Fox Inn has its own name origins story.

Chris explains: "The name derives from the man who had the pub built, Ignatius Fox.

"He was an industrialist from county Kildare in Ireland who married Elizabeth Williams of Colomendy and it was built in 1730 and was one of three pubs in the village."

I ask what's the best thing about running the pub?

And once again those he serves are the soul of the business, as Chris said: "Observing people enjoying a good pint, great food and friendly company."

It is also a great community feel that has pride of place as one of Chris' most memorable moments.

He recalls: "Back in 2013 we had a village festival weekend which was opened by the Thwaites Brewery shire horses and this drew a very large crowd.

"It was a marvellous sight for all to see and everybody had a great time over that weekend."

On the subject of great times, Chris mentions they are hoping to restart their popular quiz nights soon and get their darts team going again.

Being an active part of the community they serve really is what drives the couple.

So whether it's good food, choice of a great pint, lure of an open fire or simply a wonderful location, The Fox In ticks all the right boxes for a quality country pub.
