Lockdown saw many people embark on projects they'd previously not had time to start, and one Wrexham man certainly did just that.

Glyn Hughes, from Llay, has had three passions in life - his art, his garden and Wrexham AFC..

The garden blossomed at every turn on my sunny Wednesday afternoon but it was his love for the town's football club that was to be the subject of my visit.

During the lockdowns, the 84-year-old got busy filling more than a dozen scrapbooks and frames with his collection of newspaper clippings, photos and match programmes, many of which have been donated to him over the years.

So impressive was the collection, that even the then Wrexham Mayor Cllr Rob Walsh paid a visit to see Glyn's efforts.

Even the new Hollywood-style Wrexham sign that appeared on Bersham Bank, revealed to be the work of National Football League sponsors Vanarama, has made it into the scrapbooks.

Glyn has been a Wrexham AFC fan for almost 60 years.

He said: "I loved it, the atmosphere was amazing.

"I used to talk to Joey Jones, Arfon Griffiths, Mickey Thomas, John Lyons, and Bobby Shinton, my best player of the lot.

"I remember a policeman [Charlie Matthews], he'd be by the gates, well over six foot tall. If he was hanging about, you didn't get any trouble around the stadium."

Talking about the club's new owners, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, who make several appearances in his collection, Glyn adds: "It's a great thing for the club and the town. I'd love meet them!"

And what does wife Irene think to it all? She says smiling: "It kept him occupied."

Glyn's eyesight is no longer what it was, so match days will have him enjoying the game over the radio, with all Wrexham fixtures broadcast on BBC Radio Wales 95.4FM.

But his love for the club hasn't waned, and like thousands of fans, he's excited for the future of The Reds.
