A DEESIDE man has been handed a suspended sentence after he admitted possessing cannabis.

Anthony Lee Godfrey, of Sealand Avenue in Garden City, appeared at Mold Crown Court on Wednesday for sentence.

The 34-year-old had previously admitted one offence of possessing cannabis.

Ember-Jade Wong, prosecuting, said that on April 16 last year on Gladstone Way in Flintshire, police stopped a vehicle after it was spotted being driven in a suspicious manner.

Godfrey was the driver and he had a passenger.

Police noticed a smell of cannabis and when Godfrey was detained they found a sports bag containing numerous bags of cannabis.

One of those bags had a forensic link to Godfrey, the court heard.

Robin Boag, defending, told the court his client was a digger driver and he used cannabis to help with his anxiety.

He is "optimistic" about securing work, Mr Boag said.

Judge Rhys Rowlands told the defendant his case was aggravated by a number of previous cannabis offences dating back to 2009 including two of possession, one of possession with intent to supply, and one of being concerned in the production of the drug.

The Judge handed him a 28 day custodial sentence but suspended it for six months.

He attached no requirements to the sentence but ordered Godfrey to pay a £250 contribution to costs and a £128 victim surcharge.
