A MAN whose behaviour was branded ‘vile and disgusting’ after he threatened to rape children and defaced a war memorial has narrowly avoided jail.

Gareth Bradley, 31, or Morlan Park in Rhyl appeared at Caernarfon Crown Court for a ‘myriad of offences’ including criminal damage, racially aggravated harassment and assaulting emergency workers.

The court heard how Bradley suffers with 'serious' mental health issues which stem back to his childhood.

Prosecution Counsel Ryan Rothwell said the long list of offences date back to August 14, 2020 when he was living at Glyn Ceiriog caravan park in Llangollen.

Bradley was ‘running around’ shouting racial abuse when the police were called.

But the 31-year-old ‘picked up a branch’ holding it in the air and ‘ran towards people’.

Mr Rothwell said Bradley told one resident that ‘gingers are Satan’ and called him the ‘anti-Christ’.

He also told residents he had hepatitis B and Covid and spat in faces.

Mr Rothwell told the court he continued shouting things like ‘Hail Hitler’ and that he was going to ‘rape his mother’ and ‘any child on this park’.

He said: “His comments were racist, anti-semitic and homophobic.”

The court heard how Bradley said he had taken an overdose and was going to ‘kill the police’ and ‘only wanted white police to deal with’.

When officers arrived, Mr Rothwell said Bradley was ‘initially compliant’ until he found out one of the officers was from Eastern Europe and became ‘hostile’.

He continued with racist chants and threatened to rape and kill the police officer’s children, also spitting at them saying he had Covid.

Whilst at hospital he made ‘sexist and derogatory comments’ and made comments about sexually abusing children.

Bradley was then taken to custody but ‘continued to be abusive’ and when interviewed he accepted some of his behaviour but ‘couldn’t remember other parts’.

Whilst under investigation for those offences, in February of this year Bradley defaced a war memorial in Rhyl which translated to ‘we have to exterminate the Jews’ and ‘German second empire’.

In April, Bradley caused over £9,000 worth of damage after scratching four separate cars in Rhyl.

Police attended his address and admitted damaging the memorial because ‘it’s racist’ and upon a search, a quantity of cannabis was found.

Mr Rothwell told the court he was taken to St Asaph custody suit where he caused over £250 worth of damage to his cell.

Bradley defecated and threw the matter at the camera and ripped up a Bible as well as using his zip to scratch phrases into the wall including a swastika symbol.

He also ‘assaulted a custody detention officer’ and when interviewed he said he didn’t know why he did those things.

Defence counsel Frances Wilmott said these were ‘serious offences’ and she couldn’t detract from his ‘abhorrent and shocking actions’.

She told the court that these are ‘clearly the product of someone suffering mental ill health’.

Bradley, who has five convictions for 16 offences dating back to 2015, admitted all the charges put to him and said his mental health was in a bad way and that he couldn't explain his actions.

Judge Recorder Wyn Lloyd Jones said his behaviour back in August was ‘disgraceful’ and ‘must have been terrifying for everyone’.

He went on to say that the references to Covid must have been ‘particularly distressing’ and his behaviour towards police was ‘vile and disgusting’ when they turn up to do their job to protect the public.

He added that he had read psychiatric reports and although his behaviour is ‘disgraceful’, he has ‘serious mental health issues which go back to a very early age’.

The Judge told Bradley he accepted his remorse but the offences are clearly so serious only a custodial sentence is appropriate.

However this ‘is not an ordinary case’ due to his mental health struggles and so decided to suspend the sentences.

For the August offences, Bradley was given 12 months for affray, four months for assault by beating, six months for the assault on an emergency worker, six months for assault on another emergency worker and four months for racially aggravated harassment, all to run concurrently – so a total of 12-months.

For the 2021 matters, Bradley was given a total of six months, to run consecutively with the August offences, meaning he was given an 18-month sentence.

This was suspended for two years.

The Judge added: "I have to consider and to decide what is best for society and what is best for you.

“It seems to me having regard to your accommodation, your change of attitudes, there is a realistic prospect of rehabilitation.

"Your mental health is at the heart of this case.”

Bradley was also ordered to carry out a 50-day rehabilitation requirement and subjected to a three-year restraining order banning him from entering the Glyn Ceiriog caravan park.
