IGNORANCE of the laws surrounding the use of e-scooters is not an excuse, police have warned.

The statement came from the Wrexham Town Policing team on Sunday afternoon as one of the vehicles was seized.

Previously, the Leader has reported on the advice from Sgt David Smith regarding the proper use of e-scooters under the current legislation.

Owners of the vehicles in North Wales can currently only ride them on private land and with the landowner's permission.

A spokesman for the Wrexham Town Police team stated on Sunday: "Last month we launched a week-long campaign to raise awareness about e-scooters, we shared lots of information and held engagement events across Wrexham in a bid to educate people about them and prevent someone from getting seriously injured.

"Unfortunately a minority of people continue to use them on our roads.

"This one (pictured) was seized from an adult earlier today.

"Ignorance of the law is not an excuse, they can only be ridden on private land with consent of the landowner."

Speaking during the week-long awareness campaign, Sgt Smith said: "We are seeing adults and children using them right across the town - using phones, going through red lights, going on pavements and with several people on at once.

"There have unfortunately been some deaths nationally through the use of e-scooters and we want to prevent that in Wrexham.

"We appreciate these are expensive and we are trying to give people the opportunity to learn.

"But if it comes to a point where enforcement is the only option, you can't claim ignorance to the law when we're doing all of this awareness."
