MOTORISTS in Wrexham have been warned they face a potential fine if they ignore one way road signage.

The advice came from the Wrexham Rural policing team on Wednesday evening.

A spokesman said: "PCSOs have patrolled Merlin street in Johnstown today following reports of people ignoring the one way section.

"Failing to comply with a no entry sign is extremely dangerous and you could get issued with a fine."

Councillor David A Bithell, County Councillor for Johnstown, said: "With it being a one way legal order it's not a council matter to impose, it is a police matter.

"So I did ask Inspector Gavin Gilmore to see if officers could monitor it.

"It has been in operation for two or three years now and it mainly works well.

"But people abuse the situation and they take a short cut.

"We get a lot of complaints from time about people abusing it.

"We have done this for safety - it enables cars to go in one way and come out the other.

"Clearly, if traffic is coming in the other way the danger is it's head on - they could have a collision or an accident and we don't want that.

"The reality is that police have the powers prosecute and I am sure people don't want that.

"Just think of other people who live there.

"There may be children, there are shops in that vicinity as well and normally it's a very slow speed area.

"Why risk a potential accident and a fine by not going a minute more and round another junction?"

Community Councillor Ruth Thomas told the Leader: "It is a problem and it's been going on a while.

"I don't go up that way often but I have heard from people who live there about it.

"If traffic is coming the wrong way up the road they could knock someone down - because when it's one way you look to the left or the right when you're crossing, but not the way you're not expecting them from.

"It could be a child or a mum with a pram."

Following the police warning about a potential penalty for those ignoring the rules, she added: "If they are going to flout the rules they are going to get clobbered.

"It's very well signposted and if you drive through it you know it.
"Stay within the law and be careful."
