ONLY the double vaccinated will be allowed in nightclubs from September in England, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced.

At a UK Government press conference on Monday evening, the PM said new requirements will be imposed on the nightclub industry in autumn.

Hundreds in England enjoyed 'Freedom Day' as nightclubs re-opened at midnight without any restrictions.

However, the PM said that by the end of September, when all over-18s will have had their chance to be 'double-jabbed', they are planning to make full vaccination a condition of entry into nightclubs and other venues where large crowds gather.

Mr Johnson said: “Proof of a negative test will no longer be enough.”

The prime minister also suggested that mandatory Covid passports could be brought in sooner.

He added that nightclubs need to do the socially-responsible thing and make use of the NHS Covid pass.

Meanwhile, Wales has adopted a different approach and will not be introducing a 'Freedom Day'.

Mark Drakeford said Wales will move fully into Alert Level One from July 17.

If infection rates then remain stable and even more people are vaccinated, Wales will move to Level Zero on August 7.

The rules relaxed from July 17 included:

  • Up to six people can meet indoors in private homes and holiday accommodation.
  • Organised indoor events can take place for up to 1,000 seated and up to 200 standing.
  • Ice rinks can reopen.
  • New rules for children’s residential activity centres so children in groups of up to 30 can visit.
  • A specific requirement for employees to provide comprehensive information on the risks and mitigations identified in the COVID risk assessment with their employees.

Wales could move to Alert Level 0 on 7 August so all premises would be able to open and most – but not all – restrictions will be removed

There will also be no legal limits on the number of people who can meet others indoors, including in private homes
