A HMP Berwyn inmate has had his jail time extended after he admitted trying to bring thousands of pounds worth of cannabis into the prison.

Lewis Spink appeared via video link from the prison at Mold Crown Court on Thursday.

The 30-year-old, previously of Great King Street in Macclesfield, had admitted conveying cannabis into HMP Berwyn in October 2019.

Co-accused Tanya Miller, aged 37 and of Grinsdale in Carlisle, had initially denied the same offence but changed her plea to guilty in March this year - a week before her trial date.

She had previously admitted an additional charge of possessing cannabis.

Dafydd Roberts, prosecuting, told the court that while a serving inmate at the prison, Spink was visited by Miller on October 14, 2019.

During that visit, a package was observed being passed from her to him when they embraced.

Officers intercepted the item and found it to contain cannabis worth between £3,000 and £6,000.

A mobile phone concealed in his cell was found to have a message from him to her in which he told her "my weed is in Rhyl, ready," and reference to money for her hotel.

Mr Roberts said given the amount of cannabis, there was potential for significant financial gain.

When Miller's car was searched, officers also found just over 8g of cannabis.

Andrew Green, defending Spink, said: "The best mitigation is Mr Spink's guilty plea - he knows he has to face the consequences for this offence."

Bernice Campbell, defending Miller, said her client, who appeared before the court "heavily pregnant with her eighth child," has difficulties and wants to carry on the work she has been doing in the intervening period with support services.

Judge Timothy Petts said: "Drugs have a damaging effect in prison. "They affect the mental health of prisoners and undermine attempts at rehabilitation.

"Tanya Miller, The pre-sentence report describes you as vulnerable. You are assessed as having a history of poor decision making. "Various physical and mental health difficulties have plagued you for some time.

"As for you Mr Spink, given the high value of the drugs the prosecution puts you in a significant culpability category."

Judge Petts handed Spink a 12 month custodial sentence to be served immediately.

For conveying the cannabis into HMP Berwyn Tanya Miller received a 17 week custodial sentence, suspended for 12 months.

She must undertake 30 days of rehabilitation activity.

For possession of cannabis, she was fined £50.
