FRIENDS and colleagues in Wrexham put on their running shoes for a cause close to their hearts.

During the national lockdown, hairdressers from The Hair Lounge in Rossett decided to take part in the Couch to 5k challenge to keep fit and have something to do.

However, they then chose to go further this year and challenge themselves to a run for charity.

Tonisha Williams, Kelly Castell, Fiona Cupit and her daughter Bella Cupit set themselves the challenge of running 50 miles each throughout March in a bid to raise funds for Dementia UK.

Whilst also gearing up to open back up to the public, Kelly told the Leader that they had to 'work quickly' which was 'tough' but they are 'really pleased'.

After setting the target at just £100 each, the team raised a staggering £2,000 for the cause that is close to their hearts.

Kelly added: "Through lockdown we decided do something to keep fit so chose the Couch to 5k. We then decided to do something for charity and chose dementia because two of the girls have family members living with it, one of which sadly passed away. So it is a charity close to all our hearts.

"We were hoping to raise £100 each so to raise over that, we were amazed. It's a hard time for everyone but we had so much support. It’s a difficult time for lots of people financially, so every bit of support spurred us on further.

"We got back to work quite quickly after the announcement so through March was quite tough but we did it and we are just really pleased."

Anyone wishing to donate can do so online at https://www.justgiving.com/team/hairwegorunning

The fundraising page reads: "The past few months have been tough for everyone, but coronavirus has hit those affected by dementia the hardest and continues to disrupt lives. So that's why three hairdressers Tonisha, Kelly & Fiona (along with her daughter Bella) are lacing up our trainers and taking on a Run for Dementia, as we all know or have family members suffering with Dementia.

"It all started with us challenging ourselves to the couch to 5k, so in January we began our training and will continue throughout February, in preparation for our fundraiser 50 miles in March.

"I know it’s a difficult time for lots of people financially, so even if your support means simply spurring us on, or if you could make a small donation to support and ensure Alzheimer's Society can be there for the people who need them most, it would be so gratefully received, wish us luck."
