A CAR 'exploded' at the car park of a retail park in Wrexham.

Emergency services were called to Central Retail Park on Friday lunch time.

Eye-witnesses state that an Audi 'exploded', but thankfully its owner was out of the car at the time of the incident.

The impact of the explosion is said to have shaken cars parked at the nearby Wrexham Central train station, and could reportedly be heard across the town.

Sergeant David Smith, of North Wales Police, said: "The incident is an isolated accident and I would like to assure the community that there is nothing to be concerned about.

"Fortunately no persons were injured and have been checked by ambulance staff as a precaution.”

A spokesperson for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said that one appliance was sent to the incident at midday, described as a "small vehicle fire" - which was concluded at 12.40pm.

The cause of the fire has been described as "accidental".

The fire service was unable to provide any further details as to the  cause of the explosion.

The Welsh Ambulance Service has confirmed one person was taken to Wrexham Maelor Hospital for treatment.
