WREXHAM no longer has the highest levels of coronavirus in Wales.

The seven-day rate of coronavirus in Wrexham has fallen to 122 cases per 100,000 people - slightly lower than neighbouring Flintshire.

However, Flintshire is its lowest level since the beginning of December.

In the latest update from Wrexham Council, the authority says the situation is improving dramatically in the county as lockdown continues to have an impact.

However, the council says there is a "massive but".

A spokesman said: "Wrexham still has the second highest coronavirus levels in Wales.

"Basically, if we drop our guard, we’ll be back to square one.

"Lockdown is still in place and will only be relaxed gradually, and it’s vital we all keep sticking to the rules.

"Welsh Government today confirmed that some restrictions might begin to be eased in March if cases keep falling and that more children, including some secondary pupils, might be able to return to schools from March 15.

"Welsh Government also announced that from tomorrow (February 20), up to four people from two different households will be allowed to exercise outdoors together.

"However, this doesn’t mean you can drive somewhere to exercise. Exercise should still start and finish at home.

"For the moment, Wales remains in lockdown.

"So please keep sticking to the rules and help make sure Covid-19 levels keep falling in Wrexham.

"We’re ahead on points, but the fight isn’t over."

The lockdown will remain for at least another three weeks.

Wrexham no longer dominates the list of coronavirus hot spots in Wales, with these areas spread more evenly throughout the country.

There are now only two sub-areas in Wrexham with a rate of more than 200 per 100k compared to eight on February 12:

  • Town North, University & Rhosddu - 236/100k, significantly up from 101 on the 12th
  • Coedpoeth & Brymbo - 208, but slightly down from 219 on the 12th

16 of the 18 sub-areas of Wrexham have improved since last week, but two have got worse compared to three last Friday:

  • Town North, University & Rhosddu - 236/100k, significantly up from 101 on the 12th
  • Acton & Maesydre - 178, compared to 79 on the 12th, but these are low numbers
