PLANS to bring a rail station back to life near Holywell has the backing of the local MP.

Delyn’s Rob Roberts joined Cllr Barry Scragg of Holywell Town Council, along with projects and development officer Martin Fearnley, on a visit to the site of the proposed Greenfield Train Station.

Councillor Scragg and Mr Fearnley took the opportunity to guide the Conservative MP around the proposed site just off Dock Road, explaining why the town council is so keen to have a station at the site.

Issues around transportation and connectivity continue to be a major talking point across North Wales – and residents in and around the rural Holywell area are no different. Travellers must rely on using their own car or have no other option but to depend on patchy bus services.

Speaking about a station at Greenfield, Mr Roberts said: “It is vitally important that transport is improved in Delyn and things are progressing with developing a Strategic Case for investment in Wales’ rail network. This includes building a station at Greenfield, which was a key part of my campaign in the 2019 General Election.

“It is essential for residents, businesses and the local economy as a whole, that this station goes ahead. It will mean that people can get to where they need when they need to.”

The local MP referenced that a new station is being created a few miles away in Deeside and the residents of Holywell and Greenfield “risk being left behind”.

He continued: “Having visited the site, I can see just how perfectly situated it is. There is already infrastructure there from the old Greenfield station, and there is ample space for car parking and a bus drop off point.

“I will work to ensure this process is fair and transparent, and that all stakeholders continue to be involved.”

Commenting on the proposals, Mr Fearnley said: “Holywell Town Council have been leading on this project for some time and we are pleased that plans seem to be going in the right direction.

“It’s important that Holywell and its surrounding areas doesn’t get left behind in the economic development or North Wales. Holywell is a vibrant town with lots of potential, it sees around 50,000 tourists each year (pre-COVID). We must ensure that people can get here more easily.”

Cllr Scragg added: “The site is just perfect, its an absolute no-brainer why this must go ahead. The town council have over 600 responses to a survey it ran with local businesses on the Greenfield Business Park, such as Kingspan, with all of the responses were favourable.

“We really hope that the findings of the study commissioned by Flintshire County Council will bear this out.”
