THE landlord of the pub that stands in the shadow of The Racecourse believes the Hollywood takeover of Wrexham AFC will lead to good things for both club and town.

Wayne Jones, landlord of the Turf on Wrexham's Mold Road, has been rushed off his feet since the takeover of the club by actor pals Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney was confirmed this week.

On Wednesday, the world's media wanted to know what he thought about the biggest good news story in Wrexham.

Speaking from the Turf's food van where a beep of the horn or shout of support comes from every other passing car, Wayne said it can only be a good thing for Wrexham.

He said: "It's absolutely brilliant for the football club, for the town as a whole, and North Wales as a region.

"Things like this don't happen to little old Wrexham, do they? But I am chuffed to bits for the supporters, they deserve it.

"I just hope they'll live up to the promises that they've promised, and they'll develop the stadium and get us a training ground. And if the time comes when they do decide to leave us, if they leave us is a better place than when they found us then I'm sure everyone will be chuffed.

"My overriding thought as a Wrexham supporter is that I'm absolutely chuffed to bits. I can't wait for the journey to get started."

Wayne said the news had noticeably been a pick me up to the town at a time when many people were feeling down and frustrated due to the coronavirus pandemic.

He added: "Everyone is in a really good mood. Everyone is beeping as they drive past and shouting 'Come on, Wrexham!'

"The vibe around the town is absolutely brilliant."

The Leader previously reported that Hollywood stars Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have completed their takeover of Wrexham Football Club - and the duo can't wait to attend their first Reds' game when it's safe to do so.

The RR McReynolds Company LLC has taken 100 per cent control of The Racecourse club from the Wrexham Supporters Trust, who had been owners since 2011.

Wayne added that longtime Wrexham fans and supported of both the Trust and club, the Declan Swans would be performing at the Turf as soon as it is safe to do so.

He said the band, who have recently recorded Always Sunny in Wrexham which is destined to become an anthem on match days at The Racecourse, would either play in the pub or a marquee.

Wayne said: "I spoke to the band about six months ago and said when the takeover is confirmed and we can have people in the pub again I wanted them to play here first."
