PROPERTIES have been evacuated and dozens of council staff have been deployed across Wrexham due to ongoing flooding issues, a senior councillor has said.

The Leader has reported this evening on the impact of Storm Christoph across the county.

Cllr David A Bithell, lead member for environment and transport at Wrexham Council, urged people not travel unless absolutely necessary after revealing the scale of the flooding.

He said: "Over 40 streetscene staff are being deployed across the county with significant rainfall overflowing from rivers and fields onto the public highway.

"The amount of water in places is very deep, up to waist height.

"Please don't ignore road closed signs. We have evacuated some properties in New Broughton with the assistance of mountain rescue due to high water levels.

"On high ground we now have levels of snow falling and our gritting crews are being deployed to higher routes as temperatures drop.

"Please do not go out unless absolutely necessary as all emergency services are being deployed across the county assisting with many calls.

"Our staff will remain out all night."

PC Thomas Hough said: "We are working extremely hard with the local agencies, fire service and councils.

"The weather is getting very extreme and shows no signs of holding up.

"Please keep to essential journeys only and plan ahead.

"Our control room is also busy, please utilise web chat facilities."

A spokesman for North Wales Fire and rescue Service said: "We're dealing with flooding calls.

"Follow advice from Natural Resources Wales [and] Traffic Wales.

"We may advise over the phone, send an officer to assess or a fire engine, depending on situation.

"Poor conditions - so slow down on roads and don't enter flood water."
