A FLINTSHIRE girl is hoping to raise awareness and money of a condition she lives with daily.

To most, little Abigail Field from Ewloe looks like any other girl who wears glasses – but there are more complex needs going on than meets the eye.

The youngster was born with a rare condition in her right eye which means she has been left with no sight at all and her compensating left eye also has poor vision.

She now wants to help the Royal Society for Blind Children (RSBC) - a charity that does so much for many children like her who have visual impairments.

Proud mum Deborah said: “The RSBC charity help Abigail and supports our family so much, as well as helping countless other families like us.

“She is such a kind-hearted little girl who never lets her visual impairment get in the way of achieving any goal she sets her mind on. I am so inspired by her each day.

“She would like her friends and family to join in and share the love for her special chosen charity.”

Deborah said that Abigail is supported by the charity in school via Zoom sessions but would have regular contact prior to the pandemic.

They were both aware that the charity needed more help than usual as COVID-19 meant they could not complete all their usual fundraising activities.

Inspired by a family friend who trained to run the London Marathon, Abigail had her heart set on a physical challenge too.

The mum and daughter then came up with an idea to help raise some money for the charity and settled on doing a ‘Princess and Pirate’ patch walk on Valentine’s Day.

Five-year old Abigail will be completing a sponsored walk with her best friend Alys around her home village.

The little girl has asked her friends if they can dress up and wear a patch on the day to show support. It is hoped that this will also be a way that people can get an understanding of what living with her visual impairment is like.

People can get involved virtually by posting pictures wearing their patches and costumes on Valentine’s Day to the Facebook page set up alongside Abigail’s fundraiser which you can find here - https://www.facebook.com/groups/403447617540546.

Writing on their JustGiving page, mum Deborah said: “My amazing little girl wants to be like her hero Sarah Rate who ran a marathon to raise money for the RSBC. So, we came up with a plan!

“She wants to do a Pirate and Princess patch walk to raise awareness and help people and her peers understand her visual impairment.

“She wants to do it on Valentine’s Day to show the love she has for this amazing charity that helps her and our family, and so many other families like us.

“Please help by joining us or donating if you can.”
