A DRIVER visiting Moel Famau from Ellesmere Port has skidded on ice after ignoring a road closure sign.

North Wales Police Rural Crime Team says officers have been put "at risk" trying to help the motorist, who has broken Covid-19 rules by driving to the area.

The team's Twitter account said the "atrocious" weather conditions has resulted in two police vehicles becoming stuck in heavy snow, adding that it was a "serious situation".

They have been forced to call out the local volunteer rescue group for assistance.

The NWP Rural Crime Team tweeted: "One person's stupidity by ignoring rules and closed roads has now led to officers stuck in treacherous conditions.

"Sadly we now have to call out a local volunteer rescue group with 4x4 to assist. This is so frustrating and unnecessary and risking everyone."

The first message posted by the team shortly after 6.30pm stated: "A driver who ignored the closed road at Moel Famau has skidded on ice off the road and caused us major issues.

"Freezing conditions, putting my officers at risk in many ways and not just the cold.

"This is what we don't want...break rules causes risks."

A further post added: "Serious situation...a driver has visited the Moel Famau area from Ellesmere Port and ignored the closed road.

"They have then skidded off the road on ice. We have 2 vehicles on scene trying to assist but the weather is atrocious meaning both police vehicles stuck!!"
