A CHURCH in Buckley is taking action to make its grounds a safer place.

The St John's United Reformed Church has begun a series of activities that aims to make the churchyard wildlife friendly, safer and a place where local people can find a quiet space for reflection.

The wildlife gardening has commenced already, thanks to a package from Keep Wales Tidy, with the focus now being on safety.

The gravestones have all been given the 'topple-test' and a number have been found to be unstable and in danger of falling over.

Revd Kathryn Price, said: "All the graves remain the responsibility of the family, but we have also have a responsibility for the safety of visitors to the church.

"We are trying to contact people whose family graves are in our churchyard, so that we can prevent a serious accident.

"The weight of one of these stones falling on someone would cause quite an injury."

Anyone who has family buried at St John's is urged to contact Revd Price, to see if their stone is one of those in danger or a visit will show which ones needs attention as wobbly stones now have a notice on them.

Revd Price, added: "We need permission to alter any stone, but if we have no contact from family by the end of the month, we will do what is necessary for both safety and attractiveness."
