'If you need to talk, we’re here to listen', says the British Red Cross.

With the 'fire-break' lockdown coming into force across Wales later today (October 23), the charity is urging people to call its support helpline if they feel lonely, worried or in need of assistance.

Ian Clark, a Covid-19 telephone support line volunteer at the charity, said: "Like everybody else, I got a bit frustrated when coronavirus started as being in the vulnerable category, I couldn’t carry on with my usual volunteering.

"I can see the sense of staying home, it’s to protect us but it can take its toll and if people need to talk to someone, Red Cross volunteers are here to help."

Mr Clark stated that people have called the support line with a specific request or because they do not know where to go for advice.

The issues that come up range from psychosocial support to people needing food, medicine or supplies for their pets.

Mr Clark, added: "Some people phone up needing practical help, others needing advice and there are quite a few people who are phoning up because they feel lonely.

"We know that when people are caught up in a crisis, everyone’s needs are different, and the lockdown will impact people all over Wales in different ways.

"The most important thing we can do now is start talking about our problems, what we find difficult and how we are feeling.

"Then those who are struggling can talk about things before they escalate."

A spokesperson for the British Red Cross, said: "We want to make sure that people are getting the help they need during this time.

"Call our free and confidential Coronavirus Support Line on 0808 196 3651 to chat to a friendly volunteer.

"If you need to talk, we’re here to listen."

The service is free, completely confidential and open daily from 10am to 6pm.
