THE demolition of Wrexham's former town centre police station is under way.

Retail giant Lidl applied to knock down the high-rise structure at Bodhyfryd in August 2018 to replace it with a new store measuring 1,325 square metres.

Lidl confirmed last month that construction had begun on the site and this week Wrexham town police team has shared images of the old site "slowly disappearing".

Sgt Claire McGrady said: "I worked in the station for a number of years as a Custody Sergeant and in other roles.

"There are a lot of fond memories which have been made there.

"Demolition started properly this week.

"It is changing the skyline of Wrexham and it is sad to see it coming down but it is making way for the future.

"With that coming down, North Wales Police has invested in a fantastic new police station in the town centre which will cater for the needs of the community."

Speaking recently, a Lidl spokesman said: “We can confirm that construction is now underway at our site in Wrexham.

"We are extremely grateful for all the support that we have received so far, and would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding whilst we enter this next phase of the development.”

Councillors approved the scheme despite 365 people signing a petition calling for a better use to be found for the site.

Wrexham cabinet member for business and economy, Cllr Terry Evans, said work beginning on the site was a positive move.

He said: “I think it’s a good thing to be honest. The site has been vacant for many years and I am happy that the construction has finally started.”
