A REMEMBRANCE service looked a little different this year due to the coronavirus restrictions.

The Royal Welch Fusiliers have an annual weekend at Wrexham, but this year because of the Covid-19, the event was cancelled.

Instead, to mark the event, it was decided that a Remembrance service was to be held at the Cenotaph in Wrexham on the Saturday commencing at 12pm, attended by the Mayor of Wrexham, his first appointment since the lockdown.

Ex Serving members of the 1st Battalion The Royal Welch Fusiliers usually congregate every last weekend of August, or in the first weekend in September.

This has been a tradition for years, members travel from all over the world to attend.

This year, because of the Covid 19 situation , a mini Remembrance of those whom have passed over took place.

A spokesman said: "Normally, the programme for the three days would start with ex members arriving at Wrexham, having booked in to whatever hotel has rooms, on the Friday, the Saturday is when everyone would have arrived in Wrexham and we all have a dress code 0 collar tie grey trousers and Blazer with the RWF Crest on the front.

"There is an AGM at some stage in the morning, and an evening meal, for those whom have booked, at the Memorial Hall, this is attended by the Mayor and selected Guests, in the evening.

"On Saturday at 12:00 hrs there is a parade at the Cenotaph to remember those whom gave their lives for our freedom, this parade is also attended by the Mayor.

"Next year, all being well, and the Covid well and truly dead, we will return and gather as one family.

"This ceremony only lasted approximately half an hour, and the social distance was implemented, the two police officers were invited to stand along side the Veterans as a mark of appreciation for their part in helping to keep Wrexham and district safe in very difficult times."
