SCHOOL uniforms should be worn by all pupils to retain ‘some sense of normality’, the education minister has said.

The Welsh Government has confirmed that all pupils will be expected to be in their school uniforms when returning to the classroom this week.

Education minister Kirsty Williams said: “Our expectations are that, where at all possible, as much of normality should resume so we expect children to return to school in school uniforms.

“It would be helpful if the majority of those items could be washed on a regular basis rather than the necessity for having them dry cleaned. It is also to ensure people remain comfortable.”

Ms Williams adds that Welsh Government has its scheme open to particular year groups for the cost associated with school uniforms and other items of school kit, easing the financial pressure on parents.

Information on the Welsh Government website about the Pupil Development Grant states that families can claim £125 to buy school uniform, equipment, sports kit and kit for activities outside of school for your child.

Learners who are eligible for free school meals can apply for this grant for the 2020 to 2021 academic year if they are:

• entering reception class or year 3 in primary school

• entering year 7 or year 10 in secondary school

• aged 4, 7, 11 or 14 in special schools, special needs resource bases or pupil referral units

For Year 7 learners, the grant is £200 as it is recognised there is an increased cost associated with starting secondary school.

Funding for looked-after children is available in every school year.
