A LIFEBOAT volunteer from Flintshire is hoping to virtually cycle the length of the UK to raise vital funds for the RNLI.

Alan Forrester, lifeboat operations manager, has volunteered for Flint RNLI for 52 years. He has set himself a birthday challenge to complete an 874-mile virtual bike ride from Lands End to John O’Groats in his front garden.

On June 19, the day of his 70th birthday, he set off from his front garden on an 874-mile virtual bike ride to help raise vital funds for the RNLI.

Alan said: “During the current COVID-19 crisis charities are struggling. With our summer fundraising events cancelled I wanted to continue to fundraise for the RNLI in some way, our volunteer lifeboat crews are still on call 24/7, ready to drop everything at a moment’s notice when the pager sounds.

“Our charity is powered by the public’s generosity and we are so grateful for their support during this difficult time.”

Alan has been accompanied by various volunteers across the Flint RNLI team – who remain on call throughout the pandemic. As well as the volunteers, Alan was presented with a £100 donation from the charity fund of town mayor of Flint, Cllr Norma Davies.

Alan is averaging around 90 miles a day and is hoping to have completed his ride on Sunday, June 28.
