MIKE WARBURTON went from zero to hero as he produced a masterclass to win the last Modus Icons of Darts League online group.

The 35-year-old Welsh international from Gwersyllt in Wrexham won five of his six games to finish top of the group today - a result that no-one would have seen coming after he finished rock-bottom among the same group of players 24 hours earlier.

"I'm buzzing. I'm stuck for words," said Warburton. "I've proved a lot of people wrong today.

"I was getting some abuse on twitter about me not being good enough to be in the tournament but I've showed I am good enough.

"I've gone from the whipping boy to top of the table with five wins out of six.

"The standard in this competition is unbelievable, the players are too and I've earned the respect from my peers by finishing top today."

Scott Mitchell, the only player Warburton beat on Tuesday, was his first opponent and a 4-1 victory in the first match a 21-game tournament, settled the nerves.

His only defeat was in a 4-3 decider against Andy Jenkins, who looked on course to top the table after rattling off four straight wins.

But Wessel Nijman beat him 4-2 as Warburton, top of the BDO world rankings list, chalked up four more victories including a 4-1 revenge mission on fellow Welshman Mark Webster.

Former BDO world champion Webster, from Denbigh, whitewashed Warburton on Tuesday but the Wrexham ace hit back with a 4-1 success to add to wins over Jason Askew (4-1) and Nijman, it a match of real quality that incuded five 180s.

Warburton won it 4-2 and tweeted: "Finally I’m showing what I’m about!! It’s about time I pulled my finger out. I have to congratulate @WesselNijman180. What a performance from both of us there. There had to be a winner tho and I’m happy it was me."

Warburton’s big win came in his final game as he pipped Aaron Monk 4-3 to move into top spot and clinch a tremendous victory.

Webster’s day improved when he produced a sensational 170 checkout in a thrilling 4-3 triumph over Askew.
