Do you have any memories about marine wildlife?

If so, North Wales Wildlife Trust (NWWT) would love to hear from you in order to contribute to their ‘The Sea and Me’ project.

The new project is part of 'The Living Seas Wales' project, which is a collaboration launched in 2018 between NWWT and The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales (WTSWW), and is funded by players of The National Heritage Lottery Fund and The People’s Postcode Lottery.

The Living Seas Wales' team are looking to understand how our seas have changed over the years, and to do this, they are hoping to record people’s memories of the marine environment.

The importance of sharing stories of this kind, especially those passed down the generations, cannot be understated, because, unlike data already in archives, people’s stories are constantly at risk of being forgotten.

They are appealing for any sort of marine memories individuals may have, which could include a photo, artefact or any family member’s stories you are happy to share.

Nia Hâf Jones, Living Seas manager for NWWT, said: "We are increasingly turning to the past in an attempt to gain an understanding of our environment.

"Historical information and the relationship between communities and the sea are documented in reports, descriptions, books, legal documents, landing data, log books, pictures and in newspapers.

"This information is also captured in oral history – the living memories of today are the historic accounts of the future."

Dawn Thomas, Living Seas projects officer for NWWT, added: "So far, we’ve heard about the regular herring run, the whaling industry, heard reports of shells and other small sea creatures being washed up en masse, changes in tern populations and fishermen being asked to collect marine wildlife by the War commission.

"Our 'People’s Collection Wales' project will hopefully show people how important their memories and those of their families, friends and community are for marine conservation and for posterity."
