A WREXHAM woman has praised "brilliant" police officers who rushed to her aid in a medical emergency.

Donna Vicary, from Rhos, has myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) which causes her to suffer from orthostatic intolerance - whereby standing for long periods puts her blood pressure at risk of crashing, potentially causing heart failure and death.

She also suffers from asthma, which she says is particularly bad at the moment - so on Tuesday morning needed to get medication to relieve the symptoms.

The 39-year-old says the queue to pick up prescriptions at the local pharmacy was stretched "down the street" - as has become a regular occurrence during the Covid-19 pandemic.

It's then when things become serious for her.

The Leader:

She explained: "I had been standing in the queue for a while which is really dangerous for me and I was really starting to feel unwell.

"I asked the person in front of me if they could note my position in the queue so I could sit in my van and come back a bit later.

"It was then when a concerned lady behind me flagged down a police car."

The officers instantly realised the serious nature of Miss Vicary's state, and not only did they enter the pharmacy to get her prescription for her there and then, they took her home and have organised for future prescriptions to be delivered by the pharmacy.

Now she's paid tribute to the officers and the police in general.

She said: "I don't think the police get the recognition they deserve, and in a lot of cases come in for undue criticism.

"I've read a lot of stories in national newspapers of late that are seemingly demonising the police during the Covid-19 crisis.

"They're out there everyday on the frontline trying to keep us all safe, and to be criticised for doing their jobs and have some people coughing and spitting at them while claiming to have Covid-19 is disgusting.

"What those brilliant officers did for me went beyond and above the call of duty in my opinion - and I just wanted to give them some recognition."

Sgt Mike Norbury of North Wales Police's Wrexham Rural Team said: “Even in these difficult times it’s important for the public to be reminded and reassured that it’s business as usual for North Wales Police and officers will continue to do what is necessary to keep people safe.

"Coming to Donna’s aid in that situation would be the natural and instinctive response for our officers and we are only too glad to have been able to help. We wish her well. “
