A veteran in isolation had a special surprise to mark his 95th birthday.

Claire Lewis, from Caergwrle, gave a special surprise to Wrexham veteran Ted Edwards after his birthday celebrations were cancelled.

Ted was due to celebrate his birthday last weekend, but it had to be cancelled due to Government guidelines to self-isolate.

Claire made a special cake for him to enjoy in a bid to give something back to someone who made ‘so many sacrifices’.

The Leader:

She told the Leader: “I wanted to give something back, especially to someone who had made so many sacrifices for us and to thank Ted for his service.

“We all need to show 'Dunkirk Spirit ' right now and show some stoicism, pull together and help each other at this difficult time.

“Do what you can to help no matter how small, connect with your neighbours, especially elderly neighbours. Offer support if they need it with errands etc, or even to just reassure them that you are there for them and that you care.”

Ted, who lives in Rhostyllen, was chairman of the Wrexham Normandy Veterans Association.

The Leader:

Claire said she was inspired by her late mum Kay, who always went above and beyond to help other people.

She added: “I met Ted through my mum, she was a member of the Friends of Bellevue Park in Wrexham.

“They always invited the Wrexham Veterans to events and made a fuss of them. I'd help out sometimes making tea and I made a few celebration cakes etc.

“There was also a campaign to Preserve Wrexham Veterans Standards a few years back and I helped with the campaign and fundraising. The Normandy Veteran Association Standard was one of the standards being preserved.

“Sadly, mum died a few years ago and I strive to be like her. She devoted her career to nursing Polish WW2 Veterans and survivors of Concentration Camps at Penley Polish Hospital Wrexham.

“Just weeks after having major surgery for cancer she was doing the Poppy Appeal, always giving something back, a wonderful example.

“I'm not a professional cake maker, I don't make many at all just for special people and I've never charged.

“Cakes make people smile that's why I like making them as gifts.”
