A MUCH liked Flintshire man with learning disabilities has spoken of his delight at being handed a special recognition award from his employer.

Craig Smith, 43, was given the award by the supermarket giant Tesco after working at their store in his hometown of Mold for 25 years.

As a reward for his considerable efforts, where Craig predominantly worked in the trolleys section and battled through all types of Welsh weather, the Mold man was handed a card, a plaque, and a gift card for £360.

Speaking after receiving the award, an overjoyed Craig Smith said: “I was so excited to get my 25 year recognition award.

“I love working for Tesco and meeting all of our customers. I work with lots of cool people and have lots of friends here.

“My job coach helps me with any issues I have in work, helps me to book my holidays and comes to meetings with me.

“I hope to be working at Tesco for lots more years. I can’t believe all of the lovely comments and congratulations I have had from customers and my work mates. It’s unbelievable and I love it!”

Due to his learning disabilities, Craig has the support of a job coach from Hft - a national charity that supports more than 2,500 adults to live independently.

Julia Hawkins, work options manager at Hft, said: “It has been a pleasure to support Craig in his employment at Tesco.

“He is a motivated, exceptionally helpful and pleasant gentleman, and is known by many local people who all agree that he puts a smile on your face when you meet him.

“Craig receives support from a Hft job coach who provides him with support around his job development, work related activities, changes to policies and procedures, and areas of health and safety. She also supports Craig if ever he has any concerns.

“At Hft, we’re passionate about supporting people with learning disabilities to find work. It’s always inspiring to see people like Craig not only gain employment and develop their skills, but also become an integral part of their communities and build new friendships.

“We’re now looking forward to growing our relationships with local businesses to secure further high quality job opportunities.”
