CHILDREN across Flintshire celebrated their favourite stories as part of an international literature event.

World Book Day took place yesterday and saw children taking part in activities to share and explore the fun of reading.

At Ysgol Estyn, in Hope, pupils came in dressed as their favourite characters and brought their favourite books.

Head teacher Gareth Jones said: “The children have shared an hour with their parents reading, having refreshments and spending that quality time together to foster the love of reading.

“We also invited Mold Bookshop in so the children could spend their World Book Day tokens.

“They have really enjoyed it.”

Mr Jones said this year, David Walliams’ books and characters seem popular among the older children (with many ‘Gangsta Grannies’ and ‘Billionaire Boys’ turning up for school) and among the younger pupils the Hungry Caterpillar and The Gruffalo were popular.

At Ysgol Pen Coch in Flint children had the chance to meet Tony Roberts, author of ‘Alfie and the Dragon’ who attended to read for them.
