A WREXHAM business has been recognised by Assembly Members for its ongoing commitment to helping tackle plastic pollution.

Lesley Griffiths AM, and the Deputy Minister for Housing and Local Government, Hannah Blythyn AM presented a certificate to the Brockley Bean Café after they achieved a ‘plastic free status’.

The town centre café has worked closely with the campaign group Plastic Free Wrexham in recent times to become ‘plastic free’, which it has done by introducing new measures.

Brockley Bean has replaced all of their plastic straws with either metal or paper ones, while also introducing compostable containers and wooden cutlery for all takeout meals.

The café has also signed up to the Welsh Government-backed ‘Refill Nation’ scheme, which has contributed to them achieving a plastic free status.

Brockley Bean is the fifth business in Wrexham to be recognised by Plastic Free Wrexham following No 22 Café at Ty Pawb, Reece the Jewellers, Saith Seren and the Secret Garden Café at Wrexham Library.

Established in 2018, Plastic Free Wrexham is a group of volunteers aiming to raise awareness of plastic pollution locally. Their ambition is for Wrexham to become the first large town in Wales to achieve plastic free status.

Wrexham AM Lesley Griffiths is a supporter of Plastic Free Wrexham after first meeting with the group last August.

She invited the Deputy Minister Hannah Blythyn to Wrexham to help with the presentation and to meet the team as the responsibility for recycling falls within her ministerial portfolio.

Ms Griffiths said: “Plastic pollution is one of the greatest challenges facing our planet and there is little doubt the general public are becoming more and more concerned about its effect on the environment.”

“Everyone must play their part and Plastic Free Wrexham are determined to help make a difference locally. I would once again like to congratulate them and everyone at Brockley Bean for making a stand and leading by example.”
