A FORMER soldier from Deeside has made sure that people who would have spent Christmas alone have had a festive party to remember.

James Hunt, from Shotton, last year hosted a Christmas dinner at his parents' home for seven residents who would have otherwise been alone.

However this year it went bigger and better as dozen's of people turned up to enjoy the festive event, held at Mold Rugby Club.

This year's Christmas dinner included entertainment from magician Nick Marshall, Star Wars characters and a special visit from Santa himself.

James previously told the Leader that the hardest thing is about getting people to come as 'no-one likes to admit they're lonely'.

He encouraged people to come and 'be a part of this family' which paid off as dozens of people enjoyed the party.

Mr Hunt said: "The public have been absolutely amazing and have helped us raise over £2,000.

"We have had two turkey's donated from Holybank care home in Shotton and loads of volunteers turned up.

"I just want to thank the public for their support because at the end of the day Christmas is Christmas and it's all about helping each other."

Attendees enjoyed a three course meal and an afternoon of various activities.

Mr Hunt also thanked sponsors from his gas company Cafgas and domestic oil services.

Volunteer Sue Banks also visited local care homes on the morning before the party to see if any residents would like to attend.

She told the Leader of one elderly resident at Llys Jasmin who had spent Christmas Day alone due to her family being overseas.

She added: "I went to see the managers at the local care homes to see if anyone wanted to come and join the party.

"One resident was really low over Christmas and her face lit up. This is what it's all about."

Mr Hunt also runs a community group called Nanny Biscuit (which he named in memory of his grandmother).
