HUNDREDS of people turned out to witness a Flintshire town usher in the festive season with their annual town lights switch-on.
Holywell High Street was buzzing with families and friends all coming out to witness the town centre shine bright with Christmas lights.
The honour of turning on the town lights fell with local schoolchildren from Ysgol Treffynnon, Ysgol Maesglas, Ysgol Gwenffrwd, Ysgol Maes-Y-Felin and St Winefride's Catholic Primary School - assisted by the mayor of Holywell Cllr Paul Johnson.
Speaking at the event, he said: "Every year this event gets bigger and bigger. We might be a small town but we have got the biggest hearts. We have a fantastic High Street on the way and we are going to have fantastic lights. We don't need celebrities here because we've got the best celebrities ever and it's our own kids!"
It was beginning to look a lot like Christmas in the town once the lights came on. There was plenty to see, do, eat and drink the full length of the street - from entertaining fairground rides, attractions and games to hot chocolate, mulled wine and a BBQ to keep people warm.
The Flint and Holywell Rotary Club also brought along Santa Claus and his reindeer float to ensure everyone in Holywell was enjoying the festive spirit.
Some of the independent retailers on the street also stayed open a little later than usual to offer up late-night Christmas shopping.
The Leader previously reported that work to open Holywell’s high street to traffic is on course to be completed in time for the town’s Christmas events and the night was an opportunity for people visiting the town centre to see the newly developed road which runs through the heart of Holywell following a lengthy process to de-pedestrianisation the street.
