A WELL-KNOWN former Wrexham butcher has died at the age of 94.

Trevor Lloyd Jones, known to customers at his shop in Hightown as “Trevor the Butcher”, passed away on Thursday, October 31.

He was still working at the Family Butchers shop on Kingsmill Road at the age of 83 and had been active playing golf only weeks before his passing.

It wasn’t just Wrexham’s meat trade that Trevor was associated with. He was an enthusiastic sportsman, who helped run golf and shooting clubs in the region for many years, including Wrexham Clay Pigeon Shoot Club.

His son, Christopher, said: “He was a hard-working man who was brought up in a loving environment. He lost his own father in the Gresford Colliery Disaster in 1934.

“After his national service he built his own house on Borras Road after he was one of 16 families chosen by the Royal British Legion for a self-build project.

“He was a ‘Saturday boy’ helping out at the butcher’s before taking over the business at Hightown after his friend passed away in 1963, going on to run it for 45 years.”

Trevor played rugby for Wrexham Rugby Club in the 1950s, earning selection for North Wales on a number of occasions where he turned out at the old Cardiff Arms Park.

As well as running the Clay Pigeon Gun Club, he was a member of Wrexham Rifle Club and Llangollen and Wrexham golf clubs, serving as a captain and president of the latter.

He also served as captain of the Denbighshire Past Captains Association.

Combining his love of golf with his business head, he set up a golf driving range at Bryn-Y-Gog with his friend Bill “Parran” Price.

He was also a founder member and Past Master of the Pegasus Masonic Lodge.

His son added: “He had a finger in many pies and was well-known by many in the butchers’ trade as well as through his golf and rugby. He was a very industrious man.”

Trevor was married to his late wife Mary (nee Goddard) for over 60 years and is survived by Christopher and his two other children, Terry and Bev, and their families.

His funeral service is at 1pm on Monday, November 11 at St Giles Parish Church followed by cremation at Wrexham Crematorium at 2.30pm.
