A MOTHER from Wrexham was caught in a drunken state while she pushed her daughter in a pram, a court was told.

The woman was spotted in the Tesco car park in Crescent Road in Wrexham struggling to stay on her feet while she transported her five-month old daughter in the pram.

She told police she had drunk six pints and it “had gone to her head” after CCTV footage showed her losing control of the buggy temporarily as she went down a flight of steps.

She managed to regain her grip on the pram and when police arrived she told them “I just want to go home”.

Prosecutor Rhian Jackson said: “Her eyes were glazed and she seemed intoxicated. The baby was crying.”

The 23-year-old mother was swaying so much when she lifted the infant out of the pram that she needed to be supported by her arms as she was taken into the police patrol car.

At North East Wales Magistrates’ Court she admitted being drunk in charge of a child under the age of seven in a public place on October 1 this year.

The court was told the baby had been taken into care and the mother was having supervised contact with her, although she was hoping to be reunited with her.

Emma Simoes, defending, said: “She is extremely ashamed of herself and regrets her actions.

“It was a one-off and she has expressed genuine remorse.

“She has learnt a lesson as he daughter was taken into care immediately after her arrest.”

District Judge Gwyn Jones warned the mother that custody would have been justified, but placed her on a 12-month community order with 20 days of rehabilitation.

The judge said it was clear from the CCTV that she had been badly affected by alcohol.

“You will have to pay the price of your binge drinking.

“Your child has been removed from your care and you are going to have to show social services she can be safely returned,” said the judge.

The woman also has to pay £85 costs and a £90 surcharge.
