A WREXHAM-based education charity is seeking assistance to help transform an old town centre department store into a science discovery centre.

Techniquest Glyndwr’s plans to convert the vacant TJ Hughes store were given the go ahead by Wrexham Council in June as part of a £2.8m development.

North Wales Science Ltd successfully completed the purchase of the building soon after and is now seeking a contractor to strip it and carry out refurbishment work.

According to a tender notice published on the Sell2Wales website, it is hoped the attraction will draw more visitors to the shopping area, which has been hit by the departure of several major retailers in recent years.

The approved proposals, which will see Techniquest relocate from its current base at Glyndwr University’s Mold Road campus, include plans for a theatre, shop, dining area and workshop, along with interactive science exhibits.

In the notice, representatives said: “In establishing the permanent relocation of Techniquest Glyndŵr, this project creates a different kind of offer in the town centre.

“This project will provide exciting science, technology, engineering and mathematics experiences through the creation of a centrally located science discovery centre.

“The new science centre will transform a disused T J Hughes department store into a vibrant visitor attraction.

“The site is located at the end of a row of currently empty retail units, and the purchase and refurbishment of this building will act as a catalyst for further regeneration of the area; bringing positive economic change and reopening a once popular thoroughfare.

“Techniquest Glyndŵr will extend the science discovery experience into underserved and socio-economically deprived areas of North and Mid-Wales through community outreach.”

The notice covers all mechanical and electrical works, as well as the manufacture, supply and installation of science exhibits.

The indicative value of the contract has been set at almost £1.8m, which includes £320,000 for the displays.

Companies have until November 8, 2019 to bid for the work with the successful contractor expected to be announced later in the month.
