THE TOUR of Britain has helped 'put Saltney on the map'.

As part of the fifth stage of the cycling event, riders made their way through Flintshire on Wednesday, encompassing Saltney, Bretton and Broughton before heading towards Cheshire.

And Veronica Gay, Saltney county councillor, said Saltney featuring on the race's route was great for the town.

She said: "It was brilliant for Saltney to have it come through the town, the children from St David's High (in Saltney) were out on the bridge to see them whiz passed.

"It puts Saltney on the map and is a great way of inspiring kids to take up something like cycling as a hobby."

James Walker, assistant headteacher, said: "In early July we were notified that the Tour would pass the school. We therefore made arrangements to ensure that every student at St David’s could enjoy the spectacle which they did roadside.

"To see such an event at close quarters was fantastic for the students. These events do not occur very often, and at St David’s we take pride in ensuring we offer as much as we can to our students.’"
