A WREXHAM farmer’s wife hanged herself in the garage of the family farm, an inquest has heard.

Gwenan Elizabeth Mottershead, 55, of Pinfold Farm, Bronington, was found by husband Paul shortly before 6am on Sunday, February 17.

John Gittins, coroner for North Wales (East and Central) told the hearing at Wrexham Guildhall how Mrs Mottershead had worried about mental health and suicide in her family history. He went on to say that these feelings of worry and anxiety increased after the death of her mother and father-in-law in a relatively short space of time in 2018.

In the month before her death, Mrs Mottershead had been diagnosed with breast cancer, and although she was told the cancer had not spread to other parts of her body, she began a course of chemotherapy just 10 days before she died.

On Sunday, February 17, Mr Mottershead woke up at 5.50am to discover his wife was not next to him in bed and after going downstairs to look for her, found her in the garage.

Despite carrying her into the living room and calling an ambulance and attempting CPR he knew it was too late.

In a statement read out in court, Mr Mottershead said that it had been “a terrible shock” and that he “never thought she would ever do this”.

He also said he had “lots of very happy memories” and that his wife would be “very much missed”.

In reaching a conclusion of suicide Mr Gittins offered his deepest condolences to the family.

He added: “Nobody could have seen this coming.

“Sometimes, people just make awful decisions which have such tragic consequences.”
