WREXHAM’S pre-season trip to Portugal has gone down well with supporters but Mike Davies admits it is a stressful venture to plan.

The break in the Algarve has once again been arranged by Macron, who are the club’s official kit supplier.

It is the third year in a row that the Reds have headed to the region for their training camp ahead of the new campaign and Mike, the owner of shirt supplier Macron Wrexham, is tasked with ensuring things like the hotel, transport, training facilities, match day opponents and venue are all suitable for Bryan Hughes and his team.

Mike, himself from Wrexham and a supporter of the club, is pleased with how things have gone this year.

“It is a pleasure to be with the team over in Portugal,” he said. “I own the Wrexham store and there is one in Cheshire which we have got as well.

“It is an exciting brand to be a part of and it is going well, so hopefully we can continue to improve what we are doing.

“The trip has always been received well. It is not the easiest thing to put together and we have had a few changes this year too which I think will make it much better.

“We decided to change the hotel and fingers crossed, it is working out well.

“It is quite a lot of stress to get things sorted. You are relying on other people quite a lot but touch wood, I think this year could be the best one yet.

“I do it with the help of the club; it is a lot of work on my part but I couldn’t do it without everyone else’s help, so I won’t take all the glory.”

Training camps for teams of all levels are proving popular, with Shrewsbury and Fleetwood Town among the clubs currently in Portugal, and that makes Mike’s job even harder.

“Opposition and training facilities are very much in demand,” he said.

“There are something like 34 teams over here during the course of the summer and facilities are limited, so we are trying to get hold of facilities that work for both players and the fans as well.

“It has proved to be difficult but hopefully it will work out well this time.”

Mike admits he would love to arrange a fourth training camp in 12 months time if Macron continue their association with Wrexham.

“We love the club and all the staff we have got in Wrexham,” he added. “We just want to do our best.

“Whilst we are supplying the kit, this is a little bonus that I can add onto it.

“If we were supplying the kit next year, I would not say it would never not happen but it has got to be justifiable and the right business decision.

“I am just pleased to be here and pleased that everyone is enjoying it.

“That is what it is all about but ultimately the main reason we are here is for the first team and give them the best start for the new season, and hopefully it is a successful one.”
