WREXHAM’S streets were filled with music on Saturday as a new festival celebrating the area’s rich brass band traditions came to the town centre.

The inaugural Wrexham Brass Band Festival, organised by Ian Lucas MP in association with AVOW and Wrexham Business Group, was inspired by the success of the Singing Streets choir festival.

It saw four bands – the Wrexham County Senior Brass Band, the Ifton Colliery Band, Wrexham Salvation Army Band and Farndon & District Brass Band – entertain the public at Queen’s Square and Eagles Meadow.

The bands joined together for a ‘Big Blow’ at Queen’s Square at 1pm where shoppers were treated to group renditions of songs including Men of Harlech, All Through The Night and Don’t Stop Me Now.

Mr Lucas said: “I’m delighted with how well the first Wrexham Brass Bands Festival went and it was a pleasure to see so many people enjoying the music on offer.

“We were blessed with some wonderful weather and a collection of bands who are keeping North Wales’ fine brass band heritage alive. There was something for everybody – from tradition brass band tunes to Beethoven and Queen.

“This event is all about bringing people into the town centre to give them something to enjoy and remember, much like the Singing Streets choir festival. It was a big success and I’d like to thank everyone who helped make it possible.”

More than 30 festivals have been lined up to take place in and around Wrexham in 2019, which is why the town bills itself as ‘the festivals town’.

This year's Wrexham Singing Streets choir festival will take place on Saturday, September 28.
