A FLINTSHIRE town mayor has announced the causes he is to support over the forthcoming year.

Mold mayor Councillor Tim Maunders, who was elected at the general meeting of Mold Town Council in May, has launched his fundraising appeal 2019/2020.

He has chosen North East Wales Search and Rescue (NEWSAR) as the main beneficiary of his mayoral appeal - which has been named 'Save a Life, Make a Difference’.

NEWSAR provides a volunteer search and rescue service 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.

Councillor Maunders said: “Representatives from NEWSAR attended the April meeting of Mold Town Council to introduce themselves to members and provide information on what the charity does.

"I was blown away by their presentation and the work that they do.

"I was most surprised to hear that they receive no government funding and no one at NEWSAR is paid for their time - it’s purely volunteer basis.

"I thought to myself, I need to see what I can do to help and since the meeting I have been working with the team helping raise their profile within the town and we have started to plan a number of fundraising activities.”

Gill Brailsford, NEWSAR team member and fundraising officer, said: “NEWSAR are called to assist the Police in searching for missing vulnerable adults and children.

"Searches can regularly last throughout the night and over a number of days.

"As a team we have been involved in some very tragic and difficult incidents.

"We are seeing an increase in the number of call outs relating to missing elderly people with dementia and vulnerable people suffering with mental health issues.

"We also assist the ambulance service by locating, treating and recovering people injured in remote locations – from fallen walkers and fell runners, crashed mountain bikers and paragliders to injured horse riders.

"We deliver life saving casualty care to them all. Often we will need to carry the casualty to a waiting ambulance and it takes eight team members to carry a stretcher.

"Team members train with team doctors and paramedics in advanced casualty care skills.”

Jane Evans, Mold Town Council events and community engagement officer, said: “I’m looking forward to working with NEWSAR on a number of events to raise awareness of their charity.

"We’ve got a very busy year ahead with some great events and activities planned to support the mayoral appeal.

"One such event I am delighted to announce is brand new to Mold.

"AfterLight Outdoor Cinema will be showing five great musicals outside at the Mold Rugby Club during the week of August 14 to 18 and the team at AfterLight Outdoor Cinema have very kindly offered to host a Mayor’s charity night on Saturday, August 17, with the film Bohemian Rhapsody.

"All proceeds from this evening will go to the Mayor’s fund. "

Throughout his term, Councillor Maunders will also be working with the Welsh Blood Service to help raise their profile within Mold, encouraging more people within the town to donate.
