RESIDENTS in a Wrexham village are concerned about people being directly released from a Police custody suite into their community.

North Wales Police opened the new divisional HQ in Llay at the end of last year and concerns were raised at the time about how people who had been arrested and held in the cells at the Davy Way facility would be released.

At a meeting at Llay Community Council on Wednesday evening, councillor Rob Walsh said he had been approached by several residents about "single males" that had been seen walking down Rackery Lane, which serves as the main route for Davy Way.

Cllr Walsh said: "It's not a new issue, but I'm still getting complaints from residents of Rackery Lane that they are often seeing single males walking down the road from the Police station, looking like they've just been released.

"I would basically like some reassurance from the Police that if and when someone is released, it is the policy for them to be offered a lift home.

"When the new Police station opened, one of the concerns people in the area had was that people who had been arrested would be released to make their own way home and people are naturally very edgy about it."

Cllr Walsh went on to say that he can see it from a Police perspective, in that, an individual might tell them they have arranged to be picked up, with the reality being they are making their own way home.

He added: "It unnerves people and because these were concerns people had before the police station opened, it's a simple case of those concerns being proved true.

"Even though these instances might be rare, they do seem to be happening and I would like to be able to reassure them."

PCSO Dean Sawyer, who was in attendance, said he was unsure what the policy was in relation to people being released from custody but that he would check and report back at next months meeting.
