Work to tidy up a graveyard has been taking place after disgruntled users expressed their concerns over its inadequate appearance.

The graveyard at the Holy Trinity Church in Gwersyllt, which has been established in the area since 1851, had become overgrown.

But the grass, which had grown to such a height that it completely covered a number of headstones, was cut at the site yesterday.

Harriet Davies, 58, from Wrexham, said: “It’s absolutely disgraceful. There’s no need for it to get this bad.”

Another user, Thomas Wynn, 61, from Gwersyllt, added: “It’s the worst I’ve ever seen it to be honest.”

Andrew Jones, from Wrexham, said: “It’s appalling. More definitely needs to be done to maintain the grass on a regular basis.”

The Holy Trinity Church is a Parish of the Church in Wales, Diocese of St Asaph, and a member parish of the Deanery of Gresford.

The Vicar of the Holy Trinity Church in Gwersyllt shared her thoughts on why there are many different factors that are contributing to the areas poor appearance.

Revd Paulette Gower, said: “We appreciate that some graves are difficult to reach at the moment and I’m sorry for any distress or inconvenience that this maybe causing.

“Holy Trinity Church has a very large graveyard and the recent wet weather means the grass is growing very quickly.

“We’re working hard to keep up with the growth but unfortunately the rate of growth is currently out-stripping the budget we have available to maintain grass cutting levels across the entire graveyard. Grass in the newest part of the graveyard is cut on a weekly basis, with other sections cut on a rotational basis.”
