A COFFEE shop in Holywell are giving a new lease of life to bras that are no longer wanted.

Sarah’s Coffee Shop, off Holywell High Street, have started to accept donations of unwanted bras that no longer fit or are just uncomfortable for women to continue wearing.

The underwear collection will go towards the national Your Smalls Appeal charity, which collect recycled or new bras and seeks to advance the health of young girls and women in developing countries.

In late 2017, the Your Smalls Appeal connected with a charity in Mombasa, Kenya to not only provide bras to young schoolgirls but also gave them menstruation kits and supported them through education wherever possible.

Sarah Kennedy-Ratcliffe, owner of The Coffee Bean, said: “The whole thing was literally an off-the-cuff decision after a conversation with my Saturday crafters about old bras and what to do with them.

“I remembered hearing about the Your Smalls Appeal so it seemed like a natural thing to do as they work in Africa like my own charity and, obviously, supporting women is close to my heart.

“It has been a brilliant response so far, but I am happy to take more!”

Sarah launched her own charity, The Cariad Project, to support people with disabilities living in Africa through medical equipment as well as training and education resources.

Sarah told the Leader that, since launching the appeal on June 4, she has had almost 50 bras donated.

The coffee shop will act as a drop off point for the charity, and people can leave their unwanted bras there from 10am till 4pm on Monday through to Saturday.
