A Wrexham resident has appealed for donations of any unwanted fabrics that can used to assist with the rescue of helpless dogs in Romania.

Newly established dog rescue group, Ruff Start Rescue, which was created in December, 2018, aims to save the areas large volume of stray dogs that are being kept in unsuitable conditions.

Rachael Robb, 29, from Johnstown, will be travelling to Romania on November, 19th to support and help maintain the dog shelters that they work with which sees dogs come over to the UK.

Rachael, manager of the group's Facebook fundraising page, said: "If anyone has any old towels, bedding, sheets, blankets, bedding or pet bedding that they can spare, please donate to our cause.

"Even if it's only one item that you think could help provide warmth and comfort to the dogs, I will personally come and collect them.

"I'll even pay for an extra case for any supplies I gather."

Co-founders of the rescue group, Emma Bernard and Louise Gardner, decided to take action for this cause after the horrific lives the stray dogs end up living after being caught.

They said: "The area experienced a huge stray dog problem after they ended communist rule and this resulted in the government funding public shelters to be built.

"The dogs were caught and rounded up into these shelters, either by poles, just thrown into the vans or darted in painfully.

"Once the dogs are in these shelters, they're either on limited time to be killed or they're just left to languish and rot.

"It's horrific as they either fight or starve to death."

The co-founders, who left their previous rescue shelters to create their own voiced their gratitude towards their connections in Romania.

They said: "We carefully chose who we work with and without the rescuers and friends we have in the area, we wouldn't be able to do this.

"They get the dogs off the streets, out of the public shelters and into a safe shelter and then prepare them for travel.

"Helping them provide food and bedding is vital."

So far, the rescue group has foreseen 30 dogs become adopted into their forever homes and currently have a handful in foster homes within the UK who are awaiting adoption.

One horrendous experience that co-founder, Ms Bernard, vaguely recalls that encourages her to continue striving to help give vulnerable dogs are second chance in life, comes after her last trip to Romania.

She said: "The public shelters are rife with diseases.

"I took four puppies out of the shelter and took them to a clinic but unfortunately they all died.

"It was heartbreaking."
