A SISTER working in the Critical Care Unit at Wrexham Maelor is leading a fundraising drive to achieve a sensory garden for patients.

Jayne Galante, who is the Senior Sister on the unit said she wanted to give her patients, some of whom spend months being care for, an area of much needed solace.

She said: "It can be really difficult psychologically for our patients to deal with and can be a huge roller-coaster both for relatives and patients.

"It is a real harrowing experience, patients often feel isolated, surrounded by noisy machines and being deprived of natural light. Currently our only option is to take patients outside by the main door which is not private and by no means picturesque."

Sister Galante added that staff have been great in supporting the idea by holding various fundraising events, including raffles, a bed push and even triathlons and just recently, Erin Lamb, one of the patient's granddaughters did a sponsored swim which she called "swim for flowers" which raised £1000.

She said: "We are so grateful to Erin for doing this an amazing achievement for a 10 year old.

"The aim of the garden is to provide an area of solace for patients, their families and even their pets. For us to be able to do this will be amazing and will give our patients hope, inspiration and in some cases their last experience of the outdoors."
