A woman has spoken out at how this year's parking chaos caused by those attending Wales' Comic Con nearly resulted in her mother missing her own wedding.

Becky Hunt, 27, from Brymbo, described how the traffic and parking chaos made her 25 minutes late to the wedding.

She said: "The wedding was booked at The Guildhall in Wrexham for midday on Saturday.

"We left Chirk within plenty of time but came to a halt, as the two roundabouts by B&Q were both at a standstill.

"Me and my sister were giving our mum away, so luckily, we were all in the same car together.

"We struggled to get through, until after we past the train station, but on the main road people where just dumping their cars outside the Racecourse, even on double yellows lines."

Cllr Phil Wynn, Wrexham Council’s lead member for education and ward member for Brynyffynon, said: “For the Wales Comic Con, it was the perfect storm with the football game being on the same day, along with the weather being as bad as it was.

"Unfortunately, residents along Mold Road had to endure unacceptable parking of vehicles by visitors to Comic Con and probably the football match as well.

"The good news is that Comic Con is a great success and is something we should celebrate as a town, but it is recognised that they do need to take into account the needs of the local residents.

"When we have large events, we have the Safety Advisory Group meeting convened by the public protection team with the police, ambulance service and the event organisers.

"I have asked for certain information to be fed into that on the back of what took place as it’s clearly a requirement that they need some sort of park and ride facility.

"I will also be asking for a larger police presence on Mold Road.”

Miss Hunt, added: "A massive event like Comic Con should never coincide with Wrexham playing a game at home.

"It felt like there was very little effort made with the planning, which resulted in absolute carnage.

"Not everyone goes to this event, so there definitely should be more warnings that allows people plenty of time to get to where they need to be.

"Personally, the police and council need to seriously re-think their planning when it comes to these events. There should have been extra parking made available and even possibly redirect the traffic away from the area."

Despite being late to to the wedding, Miss Hunt, made light of the situation and expressed her relief at not missing it completely.

She said: "All in all, we were very lucky as my mum's wedding was the last at the hall that day, so they were able to wait.

"The Registry Office had no clue about Comic Con, so were unable to send warnings out to anyone.

"We brushed off this incident by saying that brides are meant to be fashionably late, but inside we were all panicking.

"Our 65 guests, plus staff were all left waiting for nearly half an hour by the time we got there. We had family travelling from Liverpool, and guests travelling mainly from Chirk."

The organisers of Wales Comic Con have been approached for a comment.
